L’Oréal Engagement Day 2024: A Sustainable Showcase by PIM Group | Case Study

The Challenge

Taking L’Oreal’s sustainability focus fully on board, PIM Group approached Next Printing in mid-2024 to produce eleven booths/activation areas for L’Oreal’s annual brand Engagement Day at their Australian Head Office in Melbourne, Victoria. Retailers and influencers alike were invited to experience both new and existing products from some of the group’s most well-known make-up and skincare brands –Garnier, Maybelline, and Thayers just to name a few.

Next’s involvement came after a successful build for the same event in 2023. For 2024, however, all stakeholders wanted to go bigger and better.

The main initial challenges were sourcing multiple installers in VIC with Re-board® experience and organising the transportation of the build items down to Melbourne to arrive just prior to the Bump-In start time.

The Solution

As per the build in 2023, Re-board® was the primary material used throughout. This was because of its strength, FSC Certification, and low carbon footprint. Such is Re-board’s® versatility, a combination of elements such as 20mm Kappa Board 3D Letters and LED Neon-Flex were used alongside to add additional texture and interest and to further individualise each brand’s stand.

Where possible, other sustainable substrates such as 3mm Dispa, 2mm Screenboard, and 400gsm Card were also utilised. PIM Group also added many of their own props, lighting and creative flair to make the experience fully immersive.

The Execution

Next’s industrial design team used PIM Group’s supplied artwork and mock-ups to structurally design and render the build elements for all eleven spaces/stands. These included six main brand activations as well as a welcome wall and departure archway.

The full job was divided into eleven parts that could be handled as mini projects, allowing for more efficient design proofing and tracking through production.

We were also able to pre-build some components and pack and label them accordingly for delivery to Melbourne. Our experienced VIC installation crew worked alongside the team at PIM Group to bump in over two days.

The Takeaway

As part of the PIM team’s post-event reporting to L’Oreal, Next Printing provided a Life Cycle Assessment study. This compared Re-board® with MDF to provide information regarding carbon emissions savings.* Had MDF been used, greenhouse gas emissions would have risen by 2,590kg. In contrast, the use of Re-board resulted in a negative carbon footprint of -75kg.

Overall, this choice led to a total CO2e emissions reduction of 2655kg, equivalent to the emissions of a car traveling 11,488km or powering an average Australian household for nearly 56 days.

*This study is based on a comparison between MDF and Re-board® only.

Life Cycle Assessment is a methodology that evaluates environmental impacts associated with all the stages of the life cycle of a commercial product, process, or service. It is based on scientifically recognised principles and is consistent with International Life Cycle Assessment Standards. The results of the LCA conducted on Next Printing’s operations located at 3/2 Burrows Road South, St Peters NSW 2044 and are based on data analysed during the period between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023
